Karacaoğlan (b.? – b?) The snowy swans are wandering from the nest While fine youths lie uneasy at their rest At daybreak, from behind the mountain’s crest I counted six fair maidens at the spring
Three were exceeding fair, of middle size Three were exceeding tall, with languid eyes My white gazelle into the desert strays My partridge wings her way down to the spring.
Karacaoğlan down the mountain sped To circle round and round love’s fountain-head The waters turned to tears when beauty fled His heart felt burning pity for the spring (Translated by Nermin Menemencioğlu, 101Poems by 101Poets An Anthology of Turkish Poetry) |
