50 bin ışık yılı genişliğinde ve
yerküremize 28 milyon ışık yılı uzakta
bulunan Sombrero Galaksisi.
[NASA's
Hubble Space Telescope has trained its razor-sharp eye on one of the universe's
most stately and photogenic galaxies, the Sombrero galaxy, Messier 104 (M104).
The galaxy's hallmark is a brilliant white, bulbous core encircled by the thick
dust lanes comprising the spiral structure of the galaxy. As seen from Earth,
the galaxy is tilted nearly edge-on. We view it from just six degrees north of
its equatorial plane. This brilliant galaxy was named the Sombrero because of
its resemblance to the broad rim and high-topped Mexican hat.] (hubblesite.org)

Yerküremizden 114 milyon ışık
yılı uzakta olan NGC 2207 ve IC 2163 birleşik galaksileri.
[The Hubble telescope has caught a cosmic dance between two spiral galaxies. The
larger galaxy, NGC 2207, is on the left; the smaller one, IC 2163, is on the
right. Their dance has already caused quite a stir. Strong gravitational forces
from NGC 2207 have distorted the shape of its smaller dance partner, flinging
out stars and gas into long streamers that extend 100,000 light-years toward the
right-hand edge of the picture. Eventually this dance will end. Billions of
years from now the two galaxies will become one.] (hubblesite.org.)

Yerküremizden 8000 ışık yılı
uzaktaki Hourglass Nebulası
[The
Hourglass Nebula is a tenuous cloud of gas formed by a Sun-like star undergoing
'death tremors' at the end of its life. The star had difficulty in getting
enough fuel to keep up its nuclear furnace, and has now shed off some of its
surface material in two directions.] (www.esa.int)

Cone Nebulası
[The Cone Nebula lies in the
southern part of NGC 2264, the Christmas Tree cluster. This is a rich region
with much nebulosity and many interesting objects. The Christmas Tree cluster
has at its base the variable star S Mon (also known as 15 Mon). If viewed with
this northern portion at the bottom, the stars of this cluster form the outline
of a Christmas Tree, topped by the 7th magnitude star HD 47887]. (skyhound.com)

Yerküremizden 3000-6000 ışık
yılı uzakta bulunan Ant Nebulası
[Why
isn't this ant a big sphere? Planetary nebula Mz3 is being cast off by a star
similar to our Sun that is, surely, round. Why then would the gas that is
streaming away create an ant-shaped nebula that is distinctly not round? Clues
might include the high 1000-kilometer per second speed of the expelled gas, the
light-year long length of the structure, and the magnetism of the star visible
above at the nebula's center. One possible answer is that Mz3 is hiding a second,
dimmer star that orbits close in to the bright star. A competing hypothesis
holds that the central star's own spin and magnetic field are channeling the gas.
Since the central star appears to be so similar to our own Sun, astronomers hope
that increased understanding of the history of this giant space ant can provide
useful insight into the likely future of our own Sun and Earth.] (antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov)
